Overture II: The Emerging Christian Witness of Latin America

July 7-18, 2008 – Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires, South America

This Overture is designed to acquaint participants with the social-cultural dynamics that affect the quality of life, inform theology and challenge the manner in which ministry is conducted in our urban world. Using two contrasting cultures, Sao Paulo, Brazil and Buenos Aires, Argentina as case studies, an analysis of the urban context and ministry strategies will be examined through multidisciplinary readings, discussions, interview with community leaders, and site visits.

Introduction to Global Urban Ministry

August 1-3, 2008 - SEATTLE

This course provides an introduction to the field of Global Urban Ministry (GUM). Students will be introduced to concepts and topics related to GUM, as well as the philosophy and theological underpinnings for the field of GUM. Professors, staff, and invited speakers will be lecturers and presenters in these class sessions. Students will be provided with group experiences in order to develop a cohort community to ensure a strong support and accountability infra-structure for the course. Questions such as, “What is Global Urban Ministry?” and “Why Global Urban Ministry?” will be discussed. Students will also explore the global urban issues that are challenging those who are called to live, work and minister in our cities. A visit to a local “urban community lab” will augment class time with real-life global urban ministry in nearby downtown Tacoma. This course may be taken for credit, or as an educational seminar.

Urban Field Experience-Chicago

Much of the city will be our lab. The course is designed to acquaint participants with the socio-cultural dynamics that affect the quality of life, inform theology and challenge the manner in which ministry is conducted in our urban world. This course helps the doctoral student explore contemporary models of urban mission in the extraordinarily diverse context of Chicago. There will be visits, observations and interviews throughout the greater-Chicago area.
