With gratitude to God, and to the many generous and sacrificial donors God raised up at the end of 2017, we want to share that by December 31 BGU was able to exceed its goal to match the $45,000 matching grant provided by a core group of BGU board members, staff and faculty in November.
In 2011, BGU was asked by the international leaders who govern BGU’s global curriculum and faculty to consider withdrawing large scholarships to BGU students to reduce their dependence upon western finances and control. Instead, they created comprehensive coaching and training to help prospective and current BGU students to raise funds in their own nations to support their education, and to support their ongoing ministry after graduation. Since 2011, these courses have helped BGU students raise several million dollars for their tuition, their ministries, and capital for their transformational businesses. Students do receive tuition discounts based upon the economic resources of their nation, but even students from non-developed economies pay at least 50% of their tuition costs.
To do this, BGU has to maintain affordable tuition, operate lean, and raise donations to subsidize the many students from non-economically developed nations who sacrificially raise funds in difficult economic situations but still can’t cover the cost of their tuition. It has been a hard journey for both BGU and many of the students living in challenging regions. However, BGU students graduate with life-long skills and local funding support to empower God’s call in their lives.
BGU’s 2017 year-end campaign was an excellent picture of how God’s global body should work. Those from nations with more economic resources provided the primary grant and the initial hope for the campaign starting with over half of the work accomplished. Then faculty, staff, alumni and students from around the world gave sacrificially as they could. It was a whole-family effort with each member of the body doing its part.
Of course, as one campaign ends, there continues to be financial needs as BGU operates with a very lean budget. Please continue to pray for God to provide BGU the resources it needs, and whether you might be part of this effort through your own financial gifts, volunteering to mentor of students, or helping BGU recruit new students and partners. Your prayers, gifts and help are deeply appreciated.
