This project examines the issues and factors that have contributed to distorted male identity and dysfunctional behaviors among inner-city males in the Swallowfield community of Kingston, Jamaica. It seeks to posit a model for the church to more effectively reach, disciple, and empower these males.
A sociological and biblical perspective was employed in this investigation. The investigation included surveying the target population regarding their perceptions of manhood and the challenges of males living in this community. Eighty-nine community residents were interviewed. In addition, the perspective of practitioners who work with inner-city males from various organizations, including those who serve in the ministries of the church, were canvassed, and models for reaching, discipling, and empowering males were explored and reviewed. The survey data was analysed and triangulated to determine themes. Other data sources including relevant literature and consultation with academics and government officials were also incorporated in this analysis.
The research revealed themes of family breakdown, ideations of hegemonic masculinity, male economic disempowerment, violence, and abuse of phallic power as issues contributing to distorted male identity and dysfunctional behaviors. Factors contributing to these issues, including the problem of absentee fathers, poor/inadequate parenting/socialization, impermanence in relationships between parents, and negative musical diet, among other factors, were identified and are discussed.
Regarding the nature and scope of the issues and factors identified and relevant research, it is advanced that a holistic, multifaceted, integrative, collaborative, and empowering model is needed for the church to more effectively minister to males. A paradigmatic change in the Church’s ministry to prioritize ministry to males, to be holistic, incarnational, and missional in its discipleship, is advanced. Specific recommendations are indicated in this model. Further, community and national consultations with relevant stakeholders are also advocated as key strategies in addressing the issues of the subject of this research.
