THE PREACHER’S SPICERACK A Collection of Quips and Quotes for the Pastor

by P. Joseph Barth
June 1st, 1994
This manuscript is intended to serve as a resource of quotes and poignant sayings for the purpose of adding interest to one’s sermon, speech, or article. It is to be written in a practical style and is intended for the pastor or Christian writer. It has been said that the most difficult task of a speaker or writer is that of holding the attention of the listener or reader. The most effective means of holding attention is to have one’s material sprinkled with statements that grab the attention and make the point more easily understood. This book is written with this in mind. It has some analysis of how Jesus used the story (parable) and the quote, include materials to help the reader use stories and quotations more effectively, but its primary use is that of a collection of quotes and stories. It is arranged in a topical format.
To analyze the effectiveness of this collection of quotes and stories, in May 1994, five pastors were sent a copy of the collection of stories and quotes. In October a questionnaire was mailed to these pastors questioning them about the effectiveness of this material in sermon and article use.
