The following dissertation is undertaken to discover the nature of a revival of religion. By evaluating this topic from a broad overview, certain reoccurring characteristics from past revivals should help identify the nature of true revival and the corresponding challenges that arise in times of revival. The examination of this intensely passionate issue is not strictly academic in nature. Upon identifying the nature of a Christian revival, numerous questions can be evaluated. Are there means to promote revival? Or is revival solely determined by God's sovereignty? The dissertation addresses a number of issues including the theological presuppositions that influence a person's understanding of revival, hindrances in revival, unique dangers of revival and guidelines in determining the validity of manifestations. This dissertation project is evaluated in light of Scripture, theology and church history with practical application for a pastoral context. It is hoped that a clearer understanding of this highly misunderstood and controversial topic of revival will enable pastoral leaders to provide vision and instruction toward and through a season of spiritual revival. This paper concludes by outlining some suggestions that pastoral leaders can work toward in preparing a congregation for a spiritual revival.
